Kamaru Usman v Gilbert Burns reside updates, outcomes, highlights of UFC 258
Kamaru Usman is aiming for a third consecutive defense of his welterweight title when he battles former teammate Gilbert Burns in the UFC 258 main event on Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
The card marks the UFC’s second pay-per-view event in 2021 after Dustin Poirier’s impressive knockout to Conor McGregor at UFC 257 on January 23.
Usman was scheduled to face the Burns’ number 2 at UFC 251 last July, but the Brazilian was pulled 10 days before the fight after contracting COVID-19. Usman’s rival Jorge Masvidal stepped in on short notice but was dominated by the Nigerian champions.
The former teammates of the American Top Team both bring significant momentum to the fight.
Usman is on a winning streak of 16 fights and has not lost in his tenure in the UFC since winning “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2015. Burns has played a role since returning to the welterweight division in 2019. He has won four times in a row in a dominant manner with victories over Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, Gunnar Nelson and Alexey Kunchenko. But Usman is by far his toughest test yet.
Usman and Burns know each other as training partners, but nothing can simulate the feel of an actual high-stakes fight.
Will Usman extend his winning streak and start calling Georges St-Pierre the greatest welterweight of all time? Or will Burns give Usman his first loss and start a new era in the £ 170 division?
