Lenny Kravitz designs a Steinway & Sons piano with African influences

If you get an idea Steinway grand pianoIt probably has winding, tapered legs, maybe a flourish or two. The overall effect is grace, tradition and elegance. Her mental image likely does not include oversized, hulking, roughly hewn black legs and a contrasting glossy, tiger-striped body overlaid with chevrons and zigzags. The difference is Lenny Kravitz.

Two years ago, Steinway invited the multi-award winning musician, designer, style icon, actor and now writer (he has a treatise out) to create one limited edition their model B series. But the first reaction of the venerable piano manufacturer when Lenny Kravitz presented his design to them, was a collectively raised eyebrow.

As a visual tour de force, his concept combines elements of the art deco and Modern art styles with allusions to African art that mix rich woods and metals. Hand painted Geometric carvings referencing traditional tribal motifs run across the lid and sides of the piano, while cheetah-patterned cushions sit over the bench. Perhaps the most striking feature, however, is the poplar legs, whose blocky weight and distinctive notches were inspired by the West African sculptures Lenny Kravitz has collected for a long time. These structural supports resemble charred wood and are a surprising departure from it Steinway– who has been creating instruments for the world’s leading musicians since 1853.

Lenny Kravitz comes to Steinway as the youngest creative partner with the conception of a Limited edition piano– On the trail of visionaries like Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and Sculptor Dale Chihuly.

Overall that is experienced craftsmen at the SteinwayThe huge facility in Queens will spend some 200 hours of hand-carving each instrumentwhose edge is made from 15 layers of stone maple, then accented with two layers of Macassar ebony veneer. The team also worked with other members of the Queens creative community: the lyre that supports the pedals of the piano is cast in solid bronze nearby Modern art foundry, happened to be in the Steinway historic former family mansion.
