NHL COVID-19 Case Tracker: Up to date listing of gamers to overlook out on video games through the 2021 season

Before the puck fell in the 2021 NHL season, the league was already affected by COVID-19.

In addition to postponing the start date to January 13, some players tested positive and four teams had training camps suspended for at least a day or a large number of players missed the time. The stars closed their warehouse on Jan. 9 after it was revealed that six players and two staff members tested positive. The Penguins canceled the training camp on the same day, while the Blue Jackets missed 19 players on January 8th. On January 10, the Canucks canceled the training “out of caution due to possible exposure to COVID-19”. ‘

The day before the start of the season, the NHL announced that 27 players had tested positive at the training camp. 17 of them were members of the Stars. The league’s statement found that most players were “asymptomatic” and “recovered without complications”. Rangers striker Mika Zibanejad confirmed on Jan. 11 that he had missed the camp start due to a positive COVID-19 test. On January 13, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar announced that defender Erik Johnson had tested positive.

Ahead of the league’s opening game on Wednesday, the NHL announced that two players would miss the first game due to absences related to the COVID protocol. Players listed under this category do not necessarily have to have tested positive for coronavirus. Adding them to the list might be a precautionary measure.

According to the NHL press release, the reason a player is listed as “Unavailable” due to COVID protocols includes: (1) an initial positive test that remains unconfirmed until the confirmatory test is completed; (2) mandatory isolation for symptomatic individuals; (3) quarantine required as close high risk contact; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and / or; (5) Quarantine for travel or other reasons.

The NHL will publish names before each game.
