QB Jake Garcia, # 18 Recruit on ESPN 300, pledges to play soccer for the Miami Hurricanes
ESPN 300 quarterback Jake Garcia announced his commitment to Miami on Wednesday, choosing the Hurricanes over Florida State and Arkansas.
Garcia is number 18 on the ESPN 300 overall. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect gives Miami nine ESPN 300 engagements in the class led by five-star defensive tackle Leonard Taylor, the No. 6-ranked recruit.
When Garcia went live on his Instagram page to announce the decision with his high school teammates, an announcer accidentally introduced him as a Miami commit.
Garcia then said the announcement was a bug and left the feed. He returned a few minutes later to announce his decision, but Miami was still the choice.
Quarterback was still a huge need for Miami, and Garcia offers staff an excellent option for the future as he is the secondary pocket passer in the class.
Garcia had originally chosen USC, but withdrew earlier this month and ultimately chose the Hurricanes. Garcia had a winding road to get to this point as he hadn’t completed a full season of high school football that led into this senior season.
During Garcia’s academic year he supported Matt Corral at Long Beach, California Polytechnic and then moved to several high schools. Originally from California, Garcia moved to Valdosta High School in Georgia earlier this year when California decided to postpone its high school season.
His father moved him to Georgia while his mother stayed in California. Garcia’s father, Randy, told ESPN that he and wife Yvonne had legally separated to meet Georgia High School Association’s transfer requirements.
The GHSA found him ineligible, so Garcia moved to Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he ended his high school career.
Now he will be moving to Miami, where he will bring much-needed depth and competition to the quarterback. Staff signed ESPN 300 quarterback Tyler Van Dyke in 2020 class and three-star Peyton Matocha in 2019. Starter D’Eriq King is senior this season and N’Kosi Perry is junior.
