Serena Williams loses in straight units towards Elena Rybakina within the fourth spherical of the French Open
PARIS – Serena Williams couldn’t make a comeback in the fourth round of the French Open against a much younger and less experienced opponent and lost 6: 3, 7: 5 against Elena Rybakina on Sunday.
Williams’s defeat came hours after Roger Federer withdrew from the tournament, saying he needed to let his body recover after a long third round win.
Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles and Federer has won 20. Both will be 40 years old this year.
Williams has won the French Open three times. But the American has not survived the fourth round here since she became runner-up in 2016.
This was the 64th time that Williams competed in a major tournament this round.
It was the first game of its kind for Rybakina, a 21-year-old Kazakhstan woman who is 22nd.
