Ottman Azaitar lower off the day earlier than UFC 257 for bringing unauthorized visitor to Combat Island
UFC removed undefeated lightweight Ottman Azaitar from their active squad on Friday just a day before he was due to face Matt Frevola at UFC 257 on Fight Island in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
Azaitar (13-0), an exciting German-Moroccan lightweight with 10 eliminations, was pulled from UFC 257 after committing a “health and safety protocol violation” at the W Hotel in Abu Dhabi. UFC President Dana White told BT Sport that its security team has identified an unauthorized person entering the fight hotel with a bracelet provided by Azaitar to bring a bag into the fighter’s room.
“It’s just bad,” said White. “He’s gone. He’s no longer a UFC fighter and he doesn’t fight [at UFC 257]. “
White said the person “fluttered” across balconies to enter Azaitar’s room. Azaitar and his entire team were expelled from the property on Friday, sources told ESPN.
UFC kicks off its third live event on Fight Island within seven days. All athletes, staff and media inside the bladder at the W Hotel have been tested multiple times for COVID-19 and were subjected to a 48-hour quarantine upon arrival at the hotel.
Frevola was moved to Arman Tsarukyan in the preliminary rounds of UFC 257. Tsarukyan’s original opponent was pushed off the map for medical reasons.
